Class Details

Monday, October 18 through Friday, October 22.

Class begins at 9:00 am and ends at 5:00 pm daily (class times may vary). Please plan to arrive by 8:30 am the first day of class to check in and get settled.

In addition to our regular class, we are reserving space for someone who is interested in the process, but does not necessarily want to tackle making a kilt at this time ("Auditor"). There will also be space for individuals ("Kilter") who are currently working on a kilt, but need expert help in a specific area.

Tuition for Students is $305 for the week; Auditors and Kilters are $60 per day.

A non-refundable deposit equal to one-half(1/2) the total tuition is due at time of registration, with the balance due no later than September 18, 2010. If balance is not paid by the due date, deposit will be forfeited and space opened for those on the waiting list.

Upon registration, a welcome letter will be sent outlining required materials (tartan cloth and scissors) and other suggested items (Ott light, small foot stool, and The Art of Kiltmaking book).

Lodging and meals are not provided. There are several hotels and eateries within a few minutes of the class. If you need any suggestions, please call the Blandford shop.

Ordering Tartan Fabric

The type of kilt you are making will determine how much fabric you require. Adult kilt requires 8 yards single-width or 4 yards/meters double-width of fabric (hips up to 45”). Dancer or child’s kilt requires 6 yards single-width or 3-½ yards/meters double-width of fabric.

Recommended weights for kilts are medium-weight (13 ounce) or heavy-weight (16 ounce). Lightweight tartan fabric is not recommended for a kilt.

Some tartans are non-matching and require a single-width kilt length. Please contact Elsie directly with any questions - (707) 762-3766 or cakiltmkr@comcast.net.

Special for Class Attendees

Order your tartan at Blandfords and receive special pricing. We offer tartan fabric from the following mills in Scotland: D C Dalgliesh, House of Edgar, Lochcarron, Strathmore Woolens
(Order early, as backorders sometimes occur.)

We also carry the book The Art of Kiltmaking and offer it to Elsie’s students at a special class price. Please call for details (800) 686-1060.

About the Instructor

Elsie Scott-Stuehmeyer learned the art of kiltmaking from Thomas Gordon & Sons in Glasgow. After working as an apprentice nine hours a day for five years, she was allowed to call herself a kiltmaker.

Since coming to the US in 1973, she has become one of the most renowned kiltmakers in the world. She is still in great demand not only for her kilts, but also for passing on her skills at many workshops each year.

Elsie has taught in Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Minnesota, Ohio and Utah, as well as New York where she was part of the Braemer Summer School for 24 years. In addition, she has conducted workshops in Vancouver and Winnipeg, Canada, as well as Canberra, Australia.

Elsie’s client list includes thousands of Highland Dancers from Primary to World Champions, and such luminaries as H.R.H. Prince William and the former governor of Utah, Scott Mathieson, as well as America’s most beloved canine, Snoopy.
